He is survived by his widow; three sons, Elton, Fred an dMerton, all of this town; two brothers, John o f New Britain, Conn., and Willard of Keene; and two sisters, Elizabeth Sawyer of North Weare and Lovia Day of Boston, Mass. Funeral services were held from the Methodist EPiscopal Church on Wednesday afternoon. REv. L E Alexander was in charge. Burial was in the Lower Village Cemetery.

Matthews died very suddenly at his home Lower Village Mar. 6, of Heart failure, following a long period of ill health. Mr. Matthews was son of Joseph H. and Adeline M. (Adams) Matthews, born in Henniker, Oct 5, 1866. With the exception of a few years, his life had been spent in the Granite State, the past fifteen years a resident of this village. He was a member of Rollstone Lodge, No. 107, A. O. U. W., Fitchburg, Mass. Possessed of a vigorous personality, genial manner and ready sympathy, he will be missed by a large circle of friends. Mr. Matthews married Nov 25, 1891, Olive P. Buchanan of Antrim. Four children were born to them; three sons, Elton R., Fred H., and Merton D., all of this town, and a daughter Vera E., whose death in 1919 his been an ever present grief. Also two grandsons, two brothers and two sisters are left to mourn his untimely death. Funeral was from the home Wednesday at 1.30, Rev. Mr Alexander officiating, B.E. Newman and Miss Ruth Newman sang "Does Jesus Care," and "Come unto Me and I will give you Rest." Harry Holmes was funeral director. Interment in Maple Avenue cemetery. Among those present from out of town were Mrs. Elizabeth Sawyer, North Weare; john H Matthews and wife of New Britain, Conn.; Mrs. Addie L Matthews, Keene; Mrs. Eva Corliss, Rutland, VT.; Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Buchanan, Gardiner Field, Winchester; Mrs. John M. Dodge, Haverhill, Mass.; William M. Buchanan, Dorchester; John B Johnson, Arlington; William C White, Carlton White, Concord, and Mrs. Annie Buchanan, Peterboro. ________ Card of Thanks To each and every one who gave us assistance and sympathy in our time of sorrow, and for the beautiful flower we are sincerely grateful. So far I've got 6 occupations for Herman: Plumber, Farmer, Machinist, Shoe Maker, Ice Dealer, Basket Maker. I should look in the directories for Ludlow and Palmer and see what turns up
