Oct 25, 1900.  page 3, col 3 Died in Sight of Home.    Last Friday, Joseph Matthews went into the woods with dog and gun as he he had many, many times before. At nightfall the hound returned home, but his master did not come.  The family became anxious and a search was instituted.  Saturday morning the body was found but a short distance from home.  He was sitting with one leg curled under him, his gun by his side, evidently waiting for the fox, which he expected would make an appearance.    his position and the smile upon his countenance would indicate a painless and instantaneous death.   Heart disease, from which he has been a sufferer, was the cause.  Mr. Matthews was a native of Henniker, born here Nov. 30, 1830.   He was a successful farmer and a veteran fox hunter and the father of seven children, two daughters and five sons, all of whom as well as the wife and mother, survive.   The funeral services were held at the house Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock, conducted by Rev. T.C. H Bouton.     The burial was in the Plummer yard.  W. O. Folsom undertaker.

  2014-Dec Added photograph of gravestone and transcription to burial event. 2011-Jun Marriage record to Adaline Adams found in Methuen MA! Listed as his SECOND marriage. Adding a task to look for 1st wife 2011 Apr Found in 1880 US Census - wife and all male kids. found in 1900 US Census - 5 months before he died. Lists JH, wife and WIllard. 2011-Mar Obit from 1900 in Hillsborough paper. Erroneously lists Joseph as being born in Henniker. Found a land deed @ Henniker historical society dated 1889 in which Joseph sold timber rights to a piece of his land for $125 in 1889 2006-Sep Found a record in Richmond Canada - listing of Zenas’ children - missing a couple though :) Get birth record, and marriage records - especially as regard danville vs. Richmond in Canada. Death record lists birth place as Shipton? Need to find out WHERE in henniker Joseph lived There is a marker in a field in Henniker [off shaker hill Road on the western edge of lot 700 next to stone wall with lot 701: J.H.
