No. 1; Jan 1, 1920. page 2 , col 2.] Miss Vera Matthews The funeral of Miss Vera Matthews, whose death at Newport we mentioned last week, occurred at the Lower Village chapel Saturday, Rev. H.A. Cooledge of Antrim officiating. Mr. Downing sang two selections. The bearers were her two brothers, Elton and Fred, a cousin Walter Matthews, and a classmate, Herbert Werden. There was a good number of friends present and an abundance of beautiful flowers. Burial at the Lower Village. Miss Matthews was employed in the register of deeds office at Newport and was found Sunday night in convulsions at her boarding place and was taken to a hospital where she died Wed. morning, the cause being acute Bright's disease. She was apparently in her usual health when she went to her room Sunday night. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Matthews and was about 20 years of age. She was an unusually bright girl, a graduate of the high school in the class of 1917, taking second honor. Besides her parents she leaves three brothers, the older brother, Elton Matthews, having recently been discharged from the service.

2011-Mar
Obit in Hillsboro implies death was from convulsions due to Bright's Disease (a common term for kidney related diseases) but we know from the death record this isn't the case
2010-Nov
EMail from a cousin of Elton Lynn Matthews states that family lore is "Vera died while giving birth to what is rumored to have been a daughter named Cherry. She was somewhere in the south - Georgia or the Carolinas maybe. Because she was not married to the father of the child, her father (Herman) would not pay for the body to be returned to Hillsboro, NH. Her mother (Olive) borrowed money from a local family to pay for her return." Some of this is contradicted by Vera's death certificate - she died in Newport NH - however the part regarding child may be true as she died of eclampsia - a state of seizure related to pregnancy.

2007-Oct Found Vera's death certificate - interesting that she died of eclampsia and something else
