399 | Hillsborough Messenger: Vol. XXXIII. No. 43. Oct 25, 1900. page 3, col 3 Died in Sight of Home. Last Friday, Joseph Matthews went into the woods with dog and gun as he he had many, many times before. At nightfall the hound returned home, but his master did not come. The family became anxious and a search was instituted. Saturday morning the body was found but a short distance from home. He was sitting with one leg curled under him, his gun by his side, evidently waiting for the fox, which he expected would make an appearance. his position and the smile upon his countenance would indicate a painless and instantaneous death. Heart disease, from which he has been a sufferer, was the cause. Mr. Matthews was a native of Henniker, born here Nov. 30, 1830. He was a successful farmer and a veteran fox hunter and the father of seven children, two daughters and five sons, all of whom as well as the wife and mother, survive. The funeral services were held at the house Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock, conducted by Rev. T.C. H Bouton. The burial was in the Plummer yard. W. O. Folsom undertaker. | MATTHEWS, Joseph H (373)
