Mr. Matthews was born in Derry, the son of Norman and Malvina (Daniels) Matthews. They moved here before he was five years old, residing on the Whittemore Place now occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Fisher. He had borded with them the past year and a half. No. 1; Jan 1, 1920. page 2 , col 2.] Miss Vera Matthews The funeral of Miss Vera Matthews, whose death at Newport we mentioned last week, occurred at the Lower Village chapel Saturday, Rev. H.A. Cooledge of Antrim officiating. Mr. Downing sang two selections. The bearers were her two brothers, Elton and Fred, a cousin Walter Matthews, and a classmate, Herbert Werden. There was a good number of friends present and an abundance of beautiful flowers. Burial at the Lower Village. Miss Matthews was employed in the register of deeds office at Newport and was found Sunday night in convulsions at her boarding place and was taken to a hospital where she died Wed. morning, the cause being acute Bright's disease. She was apparently in her usual health when she went to her room Sunday night. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Matthews and was about 20 years of age. She was an unusually bright girl, a graduate of the high school in the class of 1917, taking second honor. Matthews died very suddenly at his home Lower Village Mar. 6, of Heart failure, following a long period of ill health. Mr. Matthews was son of Joseph H. and Adeline M. (Adams) Matthews, born in Henniker, Oct 5, 1866. With the exception of a few years, his life had been spent in the Granite State, the past fifteen years a resident of this village. He was a member of Rollstone Lodge, No. 107, A. O. U. W., Fitchburg, Mass. Possessed of a vigorous personality, genial manner and ready sympathy, he will be missed by a large circle of friends. Mr. Matthews married Nov 25, 1891, Olive P. Buchanan of Antrim. Four children were born to them; three sons, Elton R., Fred H., and Merton D., all of this town, and a daughter Vera E., whose death in 1919 his been an ever present grief. Newman and Miss Ruth Newman sang "Does Jesus Care," and "Come unto Me and I will give you Rest." Harry Holmes was funeral director. Interment in Maple Avenue cemetery. Mathews, was stricken with a heart attack on South Main street late this afternoon and died a few minutes later in [the] store to which he was carried for treatment. Medical Referee Forest L. Keay pronounced death due to natural causes. Mr. Mathews was a native of Henniker, the son of Joseph and Adeline Adams Mathews. Survivors include the widow, a daughter, Mrs. Louis Ames, a son Charles Mathews, both of this city; two sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Sawyer of North Ware, Mrs. ernest Day of Manchester; a brother Willard E Mathews of Henniker.
